Wave goodbye to the concrete jungle and escape to Coney Island. A mere 45 minute trip on the subway from Times Square, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a seaside carnival.
Stroll along the boardwalk or dip you toes in the cool waters. There’s a whole range of rides at Luna Park to please both little and big kids alike. Or, browse the beachy shops and pick up a tank or baseball cap – who needs Fifth Avenue?
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the original Nathan’s for a hotdog or two. If you’re visiting in the heat of summer, you might want to head to the aquarium for some A/C. The Sea Lion Show is fun but be aware that not all the attractions may be open due to renovations from Hurricane Sandy. It’s still fun for a short visit.
No trip to Coney Island is complete without visiting Coney’s Cones. Great, Italian gelato – the pistachio is my favourite.
With wind swept hair and salt in your shoes, head back downtown but not before hopping off in Dumbo. Time it right and you’ll be in for a treat with sunset views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge. Ahh New York, coming back to the city might not be so bad after all.
How to get to Coney Island:
Take the D, F, N or Q train to Stillwell Ave. Station.
What to Bring:
Sunnies, suncream and a hat if you’re visiting in summer. The locals also take beach chairs and towels.
